Three New Monuments-Now It's Idaho's Turn

On Friday, July 10, Pres. Barack Obama created three national monuments, bringing his total to 19. So far, he has protected more than 260 million acres of public lands and waters-more than any other president. On this one day, he set aside 1 million acres of public land in three states:

  • Berryessa Snow Mountain in northern California, a woodlands landscape about 100 miles from the San Francisco Bay area used for a variety of recreational activities.
  • Waco Mammoth in Texas, about 107 acres between Dallas and Austin, where the 65,000-year-old remains of two dozen Columbian mammoths were discovered.
  • Basin and Range in Nevada, around 700,000 acres of mountains and valleys, featuring rock art that dates back 4,000 years.

The administration has demonstrated its commitment to protecting special places-especially when local support is clear and strong. For the last three years, the Idaho Conservation League has worked to build a strong base of support for the Boulder-White Clouds national monument. Let's join together and tell Washington, DC, that we want the Boulder-White Clouds area of Central Idaho protected now!Because local support is so important for an area to be considered for a presidential proclamation, your voice matters. The President needs to know that you support protecting this area as a national monument and why: what is it that you value most about the Boulder-White Clouds? So take action now and encourage him to make this his 20th national monument!
